Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants may be an option if you are missing any of your natural teeth. They replace the feel and function of your natural teeth and can restore cosmetic appearance.

Under the right circumstance dental implants can reduce or eliminate discomfort, improve your quality of life, and help you regain the confidence a healthy smile can provide.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are medical devices implanted into the jawbone that provide support for artificial teeth. Implants are made with titanium which allows the implant to fuse to your jawbone keeping the implant from slipping, making noise and does not cause further bone damage the way fixed bridgework or dentures might.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants can restore your smile and confidence. They can also improve the ability to chew food, improve speech and are a permanent and more comfortable alternative to dentures.

Who are they for?

Dental implants may be an option if you have one or more broken, decayed, or missing teeth caused by injury or disease. Another reason to consider implants is if you are unable or unwilling to wear dentures. There are many factors that can determine if implants are the right option.

The main factors include the following: if you have adequate bone to secure the implants, have healthy oral tissue, do not smoke tobacco, or have health conditions that would affect the healing process and you must also be willing to commit several months to the process. A thorough evaluation and consultation with the doctor are needed to determine if implants are the right choice.

How does the procedure work?

Because dental implants require one or more surgical procedures, you must have a thorough evaluation to prepare for the process. This includes a comprehensive exam, review of your medical history and a treatment plan tailored to your situation. To control pain, anesthesia options during surgery include local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. Your doctor will go over the choices and together you will choose the right option for you. You will also be instructed about eating and drinking before surgery, depending on what type of anesthesia you have.

If you're having sedation or general anesthesia, plan to have someone take you home after surgery and expect to rest for the remainder of the day. After the procedure you may experience some of the typical discomforts associated with any type of dental surgery, such as swelling of your gums or face, bruising of your skin and gums, pain at the implant site, and minor bleeding. You may also need pain medications or antibiotics. After each stage of surgery, you may need to eat soft foods while the surgical site heals.

How long do implants last?

When cared for properly, the implant screw can last a lifetime. The crown can last 10 to 15 years before needing replacement from wear and tear.
